Lucie Kuhlmann

It seems like for every 1 hour we spend on pruning other grape vines we spend about 100 on Lucie Kuhlmann. Talk about needy. I’ll cut back my Lucie Kuhlmann to 14 buds in the spring. Let me rephrase that, in the spring, I think I have cut back the buds to 14 buds but, when I come back to look at that vine in two weeks there is 100 buds growing. Same thing whenever you remove a runner at the base of the vine in the spring. Take one away and it’s almost like it spawns ten more growths like some Alien movie.
You probably get the picture by now, Lucie Kulmann needs a lot of TLC in the pruning department. For someone who loves pruning, Lucie Kuhlmann is your vine because that is pretty much all you have to do with this one. It has great resistance to Powdery and Downy Mildew so for anyone wanting to go the organic route, it is a solid pick. Just be careful though, most organic growers use Sulphur and it will burn the growth. Other than that, the clusters are rather small, so the vine isn’t a nutrient hog like some others.
Lucie Kuhlmann is very similar to the more popular Marechal Foch and if there is one thing it has going for it is a much more flattering name. Or should I say cool… harr harr
