How Not to Grow a Grape Vine

12/19/2016

Answer: Don’t put a grape vine in the ground.  Duh….
Dad Joke. Sorry.
Here’s some things to avoid that I commonly see:
  • Growing way too many grapes to start.  There is not wrong with not knowing how to plant a vine.  We are all learning.  There is something wrong however with planting 30 acres of grapes your first go at it.  I would strongly recommend with starting out with just a few.  It is much better to grow a few vines well than thousands terribly.  You can’t make wine out of bad grapes.
  • Growing too many different varieties.  Generally the growers in the area know what grows well and what doesn’t.  Too many times, I see a first time growers planting many different varieties of grapes to determine what grows well in your area.
  • Back to the original joke.  Even worse than growing t  If you’ve been talking about growing your vineyard for ten years, get out there and do it!
